Images of Masculinity: Hair.

Those were the days, my friend

I’ve been thinking a bit about hair and masculinity recently, maybe because of Movember. Hair is a potent marker of masculine identity, and  means many things, it can for example affirm, conform with or transgress and subvert gender norms. Aside from the meanings around the actual hair, be it bodily or on the head or face, there are great social rituals and cultural importance around its removal, as this picture and its title suggest.

I really like this set of photographs by Sophia Wallace, providing a great little image of hair as an integral part of a masculine identity, and an example of gender transgression.
